Because of the handicap, Purbeck only needed to draw 3-3 to win and after an hour's or so play things weren't looking too bad with all the games being fairly even. Unfortunately (for Purbeck) the rot then set in - first of all on board 2 John blundered too much material to carry on so resigned. Then on board 6 Jeremy lost a Q + P ending a pawn down to the newly crowned Dorset Junior Champion. I was next on board 1 when I blundered a piece in a perfectly reasonable position. Mike and I then went to the bar to go over the game and while we were in there, Nick (board 3) came in to say he'd turned a better position into a loss and then Richard (board 5) came in to say he'd turned a better position into a draw! Finally, when I had finished my game, Derek on board 4 was a pawn up but when I returned from the bar he was a pawn down and eventually lost the ending. Anyway, well done to Poole who managed to win by employing the devilish strategy of playing better moves than us!
