Lytham2 visited Preston`s new home venue, Jalgos Club. Evenly matched teams produced a close contest. Board 2 was first to finish - an enterprising Budapest Gambit from Black eventually fizzled out into a level R, B and several pawns ending. On 3 Black mishandled the French allowing the queenside to be blocked and having a typical bad bishop. White`s kingside initiative looked dangerous but Black constructed an adequate defence. On 1 Phil craftily avoided Paul`s favourite Albin luring him into a Queen`s Gambit. Paul launched tactical complications in the middle game but Phil had the more solid position and better co-ordinated pieces winning two pieces for a rook. Although the material count was level (White R 2Bs 4Ps to Black 2Rs 5Ps) the two bishops on an open board were devastating. Last to finish was Board 4, in the endgame both sides had R B and several pawns. White had a positional advantage but possibly missed a chance to win a decisive pawn, and soon after the rooks came off a draw was agreed.
