A tense match which was finally decided by the last game to finish on board 1. Steve Rooney played the Stafford Gambit against Francis Best but never quite got enough compensation for the pawn. Later, Rooney tried sacrificing the exchange but Best managed to exchange off queens when the superiority of the rook over the bishop prevailed in the ending and Rooney resigned shortly after.
