No opponent turned up on board 4, so Poulton's Peter Wallace gained an early point.
On board 1, Darren appeared to have an overwhelming position against newcomer Christian, with the latter's K-side pieces still in their starting positions. However, Darren failed to capitalise, and as in soccer with a breakaway, Christian was able to mount a brilliant attack, causing Darren to resign.
On 2, Kevin was up against the vastly experienced Pat Coleman. A piece down, Kevin had a potential mating threat with doubled rooks on the h-file. Much manoevering took place, after which Pat had somehow lost a rook, and the game came to an ending with Kevin's rook v. Pat's bishop. With a threat of trapping Pat's K on the back rank, a check on the K resulted in the loss of the bishop and Pat resigned.
On 3, another newcomer Adam, had a very good game against the experienced Colin, but with one or two pawns against 4 and a knight each, Colin made no mistake.
