The match was much closer and exciting than the scoreline suggested.
After a quick draw on board 4, Len seemed to get an early upper hand on board 3 and managed to convert with some good tactics. The top 2 boards went the distance. Russ played a very imaginative sacrifice of a rook and pawn v Knight to open up Reenen's king but there was no quick win and Russ had to play a patient game mobilising his knight to create long lasting attacking chances which eventually resulted in a mistake by Reenen and Russ converted. The top board was reasonably equal until David sacrificed a piece for 2 central pawns for what seemed like very good compensation but slowly the comp dissipated and I managed to take advantage of the extra material.
With much thanks to the New Milton team players for their kind hospitality.
