We welcomed the Ringwood team to Tuckton Social Club on a cold evening. Even though the windows and doors were open, luckily the central heating was working!
All matches were well contested. First to finish was on board 3 where Jon played an unusual gambit which Martin navigated his way through. However, the early middle game position looked confusing when both players agreed to share the point. Board 4 was next to finish when Jamie won a piece. The top 2 boards were extremely close and were played to the finish. Niall looked to have an equal R + B ending, perhaps may have been slightly better, but missed a rook check which allowed Len to swap off bishops fracturing his pawns, then Len managed to swap off rooks to reach a winning K + P ending. The top board was a fascinating encounter with pawns and pieces in unusual places and both players playing for the win. Once the debris had cleared, Russ found himself a pawn up in a R + B ending but the bishops were of opposite colour and it was clear the position was drawn.
Many thanks to the Ringwood players for a challenging match and it was great to have many face to face catch up conversations.
