The online summer's historic finale was open to all 2020/2021 ECF members and supporters (membership expiry August 2021) and all playing strengths from Grandmaster to beginner.

English County Associations and their online chess players participated in the inaugural Online Counties Championship held between June and August 2020. A competition open to all ECF Members and ECF Supporters eligible for an entered County (see below), played on the Chess.com platform on Saturday evenings at 6:30pm at a rate of G60/15: Players were able to join the event upto the end of the group divisional league stage on the 1st August. U100 players joined the action in August in the National 100 where four regional teams competed in an all play all mini-league alongside the knockout stages of the Counties Championships.

Twin group all play all matches started the Group league stage on 13th June and ran through to the 1st August. These were the qualifying matches for the various Championships with semi-finals held on 8th August and Finals on 22nd August for each Championship within the Open and U1825 Sections.
Open Division 1 was the qualifier for the Open and Major Open Championships
Open Division 2 was the qualifier for the Challengers and Minor Championships
U1825 Section was the qualifier for the U1825 and U1825 Challengers Championships.

A preliminary familiarisation round in the Open and U1825 sections took place on 6th June. Teams were allocated to Division according to seeding. Group Stage round 1 on 13th July was aborted due to ongoing platform issues and replayed on 1st August.

Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire (a combined team in the Open), Berkshire (Open), Cheshire & North Wales (Open), Cumbria (Open), Derbyshire (Open), Devon (Open), Essex (Open & U1825), Gloucestershire (Open), Greater Manchester (Open & U1825), Hampshire (Open), Leicestershire & Rutland (Open & U1825), Lincolnshire (Open & U1825), Middlesex (Open A & B & U1825), Norfolk Open & U1825), Northumberland (Open & U1825), Oxfordshire (Open & U1825), Shropshire (Open), Somerset (Open), Surrey (Open & U1825), Warwickshire (Open), Worcestershire (Open) and Yorkshire (Open).

They were joined in the National 100 by players from Cornwall, Dorset, Durham, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, Sussex and Wiltshire

Eligibility: A player was eligible to represent one of the following historical counties of England in the Championship if the player was an ECF member or supporter, is not barred from ECF online Clubs, had an active chess.com playing account (and had not held any others); and meets one of the following criteria:
(i) Birth in that county.
(ii) Five years’ domicile in that county at any time.
(iii) Two months’ immediate previous and present membership of a club either in or affiliated to that County.
(iv) One month’s immediately previous and present domicile in that County.
(v) Present attendance as a student at a school, college or university in that County.
