Lytham were heavily outgraded overall even though Preston "rested" some of their star players for this match. One star who did play was Malcolm and, after reaching a position with which he is the more familiar, he proved too strong for Kit who is returning to League chess after a break. The two team captains met on board 2 and enjoyed a close encounter where White had a slight edge for most of the game. Phil Taylor offered a draw after 21 moves but this was declined and eventually all pieces were exchanged, leading to an endgame with King and 6 pawns each where Phil was unable to maintain the opposition.
Phil Raynor told me that he had a cramped position against Conor but on board 4 Dave felt the he might have done better against Graham. Lytham were heavily outgraded on the other boards and did well to obtain draws on 7 and 8. A most enjoyable match played in the right spirit. We must now wait until Monday to find out who Preston will be playing in the final. Will it be Morecambe or Poulton?
