New Milton B v Highcliffe C

Last game of 2019 for Highcliffe C proved a close contest vs the league leaders. Board 4 went to the wire with Simon winning by one tempo in a final pawn chase. Barry eventually overcame Jan in an open attacking game. Andrew had a strong Kingside attack which proved decisive despite valiant defence. Tom held well vs Mihail, but was eventually overwhelmed by a devastating queen and dual bishop attack combination.
A well fought contest at a warm and friendly venue. NM ran out worthy winners.

In this local derby it was a case of 'top versus bottom ' in the league table, and thankfully for
leaders New Milton an upset, which quite often occur when you least expect it, was avoided
and it was with relief they held on to claim a vital two points. Barry was the first to finish and
after a tight middle game gained an advantage to overcome Jan. Likewise Simon who, in a
closely fought match managed to get the upper hand in the end game to beat Ron. Steve dug
himself into a hole from which there was no recourse with Andrew building a brilliant match-
winning attack. Finally Tom, although being material down, held on gamely for as long as
possible but could not stop Mihail forcing him into resigning. All in all an entertaining evening's
chess and a most relaxing way to spend two and a half hours !!
