Wimborne A v Southbourne A

The match began with Wimborne A needing a drawn match to win the league.

A surprise for Southbourne was there ex player Graham White playing on board 4. Unfortunately he managed to get into a nasty pin and could not extricate himself and went down to a loss to Len.

Allan seemed to have a good position against Bruce but despite stopping him castling could not take advantage and a draw was agreed.

Mark went into an ending after allowing queens and a pair of rooks to come off but could not make progress and a draw was agreed.

This left the captain on top board needing to win. After he allowed a sneaky attack losing a pawn but opening up lines for his rooks the game began to turn with Ian finding some good threats and when another pawn was snatched by Grzegorz Ian found a mate threat which won a piece. After a few complications Queens and rooks were swopped off and Ian won the ending to draw the match and win the league title.

Thanks to Southbourne for an entertaining and exciting match where both teams were happy with a point.

Congratulations to Wimborne A for winning the 1st Division title. It was a tense final hour with Ian skilfully winning a knight up endgame.
